smooth-boots

smooth-boots
Used mainly in the seventeenth century of a smooth talker, a flatterer. ‘Smoothie’ would be used in modern times. As a vocative ‘smoothie’ would probably be a semi-exclamatory response to a flattering speech, though it could also be used ironically to someone who made no attempt to flatter.
